How To Get A Jobinterview

Getting a jobinterview means getting the foot in the door. Inspired by the article “designers: how to get hired” from Ryan Carson on the thinkvitamin blog I decided to make my own hire me site.

Here are two nice examples for hire me sites for your inspiration:

My Approach

I realy wanted to get an invitation from mmc:agentur an agency near vienna. As I was looking through their pages I got the idea of presenting myself like they do on their team-page.
So I asked a friend to take some pictures of me, put them into Photoshop, pushed some pixels and there I was looking like one of them.

Next thing I did was to create a huge headline saying “you are looking for a designer?”.
I tried to keep the site as simple as possible, they should see who I am, what I’m capable of,
some references and of course they should be able to contact me.

A few days after I sent them the link to the page I got the interview.

Things to keep in mind

Be innovative
People are bored of getting the same looking cv’s all day long. Stand out of the crowd, make a website, present yourself – be creative!

Show off your work
Put together an online & a print portfolio with your best references. Here are 31 tips for a better portfolio.

Analyze
Inform yourself about company or agency you are aplying to. What services do they offer? Who are their clients?

Why Flashy Web Designs are Bad for Business

Have you heard yourself saying, “I don’t understand? I have a gorgeous site, a really cutting-edge splash page with a flash introduction, up-to-date technology, I paid a small fortune for this site, and I’m getting plenty of hits but no one is buying or staying in the site.”

Well, you may be one of a growing number of businesses, both large and small, who believed all the hype about the latest in new technology. Many business owners want their website to have that cutting-edge look, and so will ask for things such as animation, music, flash, and other “bells and whistles” that would be detrimental to their site. These extras are probably driving potential customers away because they increase download time and are not search engine optimized.

The icons come in different sizes (from 32px to 128px) and they are in 32-bit transparent PNG format. The set is free for both personal and commercial use (under Creative Commons Licence, attribution is needed). However, resell is not allowed. If you want to integrate them into a website template which is for sale (e.g. WordPress theme, Social bookmark plugin, etc), you need to purchase an extended license.
